Isaac Owens - Varsity Coach

Coach Isaac Owens graduated from Huntington Beach High School in 1988 where he played volleyball for four years.  During two of his varsity years he played on CIF play-off teams.

 

Upon his graduation, Isaac returned to Huntington Beach to coach JV and assist the Varsity teams from 1989 to 1999, helping HB go to CIF finals three years in a row, winning back-to-back championships in 1994 and 1995.  He has 17 years of club coaching experience.

 

Isaac completed his Bachelor's Degree in History at Cal State Fullerton and is in his eighth year at Esperanza as a Social Science teacher. 

 

Esperanza Men's Volleyball Highlights:

2002 – CIF Division 1 Championship; -  named 2002 CIF Coach of the Year from the Orange County Register and the L.A. Times. 

2007 – led the men's volleyball team to their second CIF DIvision 1 Championship.  This team was recognized by Student Sports as the number one men's volleyball team in the state and by Volleyball Magazine as the men's high school team of the year.  Named 2007 CIF Coach of the Year and the Orange County Register Coach of the Year.

2009 -  Quarter-finalists in the CIF Division 1 Championship and ranked 24th in the country by ESPN Rise.

2010 - Sunset League Champions; Division 1 Quarter-finalists; Division 1 CIF Regional Finalists

 

Mark Lovein - Junior Varsity Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach

This is Mark's third season at Esperanza as the JV coach and his 4th year as the assistant Varisty Coach.   Coach Lovein graduated from Esperanza in 2003 and played on the Varsity team for three years.  He played middle blocker for Coach Owens and helped lead his team to a CIF-Division 1 Championship in 2002.  Following his graduation, Mark attended UCLA, graduating in 2007 with a degree in history.   As a Bruin, Mark played four years on the men's team as a middle blocker.  This is Mark's second year on staff at Esperanza teaching history.  Mark is also the JV coach and assistant Varsity coach for the girl's volleyball program.
 
 
 

Bryan Berman - Varsity Assistant Coach

We welcome Bryan Berman to his first season as Assistant Varsity Coach at Esperanza High School.  Bryan attended and played at Highland High School, earning the Golden League MVP twice.

 

Bryan was a member of the UCSB Men’s Volleyball Team from 2002-2007.  After red shirting his freshman year, he went on to play four years, beginning as a setter and then moved to outside hitter.  Bryan was a Team Captain for the 2006 and 2007 seasons,  earned All MPSF (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) honors in 2006, and was placed on the MPSF All-Academic Team in 2007.  Bryan finished his Gaucho career second in career aces and in the top ten for career digs.   Bryan graduated from UCSB with a B.A. in Biological Sciences and a minor in History.  He recently graduated from Whittier Law School summa cum laude earning his Juris Doctorate, and passed the California bar exam.

 

Congratulations to Bryan, who will be getting married to his fiancee, Alison Kauffman, this April.

 

 

Kevin Kowalski - Frosh/Soph Coach

This is  Kevin's second year as the Frosh/Soph coach for the Aztecs Volleyball programs.  Coach Kowalski played four years on Tustin High Schools Varsity volleyball team - helping his team to a CIF runner-up victory in 1998.  In addition to high school volleyball, Kevin spent four years playing for Balboa Bay Volleyball Club, where his team took home a bronze medal at Junior Olympics.  Kevin attended Cal State Fullerton, receiving his BA in Ceramics; he is now in his second year teaching Ceramics at Esperanza.  Prior to coming to Esperanza, Kevin was the head boys' volleyball coach at Valencia High School.  In his spare time, he enjoys attending art shows and concerts, traveling (visiting some 13 countries), and playing guitar.

Jon Watkins - Assistant JV Coach

This is Jon Watkins sescond year assisting the Aztecs JV Volleyball coaching staff this year.  Jon graduated from Esperanza in 2009, having played volleyball all four years and soccer three years.  He is currently enrolled at Fullerton College working on his AA degree with plans to transfer out of state to major in business economics and ultimately become a stockbroker.  Jon enjoys coming back to watch his younger teammates grow and help the coaches.
